Pauline has a friend in Ulan Ude. He invites us for a beer with
his friends. Pauline asks how he is doing, and he says that life
is unpredictable as always here in Russia. He asks if she noticed
that there are more cars now than last time she was here 2 years
ago? A lot of oil-money is around.
Pauline asks if they think of themselves as Russians; they speak
Russian, and the Republic of Buryatia is a part of the Russian Federation.
He does not think of himself as Russian. He thinks that Buryats
have more in common with Mongolians and Chinese. I ask if they speak
Buryat. He says they speak it a little, but that he is better at
English than at Buryat language.
