1 book, 2 paintings & 53 drawings
The exhibition shows the newest artworks
of Anne Skole Overgaard: An artists' book looking like a self-help
book, two paintings of plants, one big drawing and 52 small.
All the artworks are playing with the circle as a metaphor for the
perfect life.
The artists' book "My Good Life"
mixes texts from books like "Living with Zen", "Get
a New Life in 4 Weeks" and "The Self-Sufficient Gardener".
Each text is illustrated by a circular drawing.
52 of the drawings for the book are shown
at the exhibition. They play with the circle as a "universal"
symbol to be found everywhere from a bottle cap to the earth, a
mandala and a flower.
The two paintings are inspired by Anne
Skole Overgaards kitchen garden project where she investigates city
gardening and the trend of self-sustainability - an ideal which
is now further away from our everyday lives than ever before. The
plants are depicted in pale, blue-toned colours, undermining the
atmosphere of sunshine and of "the Good Life".
A big pencil-drawing shows a stucco rosette
with a light-bulb screwed into it, from the ceiling of a yoga and
meditation school. Like a mandala, you can see the drawing as a
picture of the Self in the world - and maybe as a picture of general
features of our culture. The drawing looks both beautiful and evil,
it looks back at you as an eye or a surveillance camera.
The exhibition has an atmosphere
of bated breath. The book "My Good Life" instructs in
everything from healthy candy and increased creativity to knitting
against stress. The meticulous drawings underline the amount of
self-control it takes to live this perfect, circular life in harmony
with nature.
